During the spring of 2003 my wife, Bettine, and I went to Italy for the first time. Everywhere we went there was beauty and life and history.

The Photographs

Here are also a selection of photographs from the trip, divided (mostly) into the different locations we visited.

The Paintings

Before we left for Italy people asked us if we weren't worried about anti-American feelings (considering the Bush war and all). We weren't worried and we experienced no anti-Americanism but we did see a lot of antiwar and anti-Bush signs and graffiti wherever we went. And there were peace flags. There were so many peace (PACE) flags, hanging from balconies and scaffolding and flying on flag polls that it was a rare street where we couldn't see at least one peace flag. That inspired me to paint a series of oil paintings of Venice: PACE in Venice.
I had expected not to do any paintings of Venice, it was overdone, every artist did it. But when has that gotten in my way? While there I did not paint, I only took photographs. I have now completed twelve paintings and have several new paintings in process. As I finish more paintings in this series I will be adding them to this show. Check back every so often to see the newest works.
